Chapter XIII

On St. George at Summer Camp

Year 3326

Four hours after Ryan finally finished his breakfast, he had his entire command gathered in their makeshift command center at the campground. It wasn’t saying a whole lot because in total, they only had about four complete squads of men with a few stragglers, like the razorback pilots and the few men Marvin had designated as his ghostees. Ryan wasn’t about to complain because it was more than they had originally. In addition, they had plenty of ammunition, half a dozen vehicles, and even a heavily armored gunship at their disposal for their mission. He looked around the room, counting heads, his eyes briefly locking on Izabella’s. Unsurprisingly, the stubborn monarch had insisted that she be invited to the briefing. He smiled faintly at the thought of what she’d do if he’d tried and stopped her from coming.

“Afternoon everyone, I hope you have gotten settled in, because we have a mission.” Ryan paused for a moment before continuing. “Our target is the Wreathsburg Broadcasting Center. We decided we have run for long enough and we’re now ready to fight back. I don’t know about you, but I’m sick and tired of hearing the Hrum broadcasting their message of surrender over and over. I think it’s time we sent them a message of our own and here’s how we plan to do it.”

Ryan had already briefed Marvin on the plan, so he was ready for Ryan when he gestured over to the large viewscreen that had been commandeered from one of the guest rooms and brought out into the lobby. Marvin was tapping away on his tab and had projected a topographical overlay of the broadcast center and the surrounding area for everyone to see.

“Ready, sir.”

“Thank you Marvin. Now as I said, we’re going to be assaulting the Wreathsburg Broadcasting Center. We will not know for sure what to expect until we get there. Captain Marvin and his ghostees will be our advance team. Under the cover of darkness, they’ll take the gunship as close as they can safely, and then scout the area ahead.” He gestured to a group of three of the militia who’d began calling themselves Marvin’s ghostees who had been working with Marvin on additional scouting, camouflage, and other covert tactics. “They’ll scout and report back. We have no idea what the military situation on the ground is, all of the military channels have been silent. They could just have rotated codes and we have no access to them, or they could be compromised. Until we have better intel and recon, we’ll stay off them. Shortwave radios only.”

He continued his briefing for nearly an hour before dismissing the men to get ready. The ghostees and Marvin would be moving out as soon as it got dark and he would follow a few hours behind in their trucks. Luckily for them, most of this part of the countryside was heavily wooded, and very private. There was little vehicle traffic and a lot of cover should they need to get off the road.
